
If you are injured or taken ill during your stay abroad, it is always wise to seek medical assistance. Call the SOS emergency call centre on the phone number written on the back of the yellow health insurance card, or ask your travel leader or hotel for assistance in contacting a doctor. The yellow health insurance card is your guarantee that you will be reimbursed for any costs once you return to Denmark.
You may have to pay directly for medical assistance and medication. Always ensure that you have receits for any expenses you have incurred. However, some doctors will send your bill directly to SOS.
If you become seriously ill, or hospitalized, it is important that either you, your relatives, or the doctor who treats you notifies the SOS emergency call service. The emergency call service is open 24 hours a day, and may be reached on telephone (+45) 70 10 75 10. If either the hospital or the doctor who treats you demand a payment guarantee, you or the doctor can contact the emergency call service.
Once you have returned to Denmark
You should always fill out a claim notification form and send it in to SOS - whether you have covered expenses abroad yourself or not. If you have covered costs yourself, you may be reimbursed by SOS. The easiest way to file a claim notification is via the internet - visit sundhed.dk/info/rejse. This will ensure the fastest possible handling of the matter. You may also file a claims notification on a written form, which you may obtain online from sundhed.dk/info/rejse, from SOS, or at your municipality.
In general, SOS must receive the notification of your disease or injury within six months from the time of injury/illness. Late, or lacking, notification will result in loss of coverage by the public travel health insurance, and you yourself will be liable to cover any costs. Along with the claim notification form, you must include itemized receipts, prescriptions, and any other information pertinent to the case, as well as documentation for the purpose and duration of your travel.
