Private travel health insurance

Euro

There is no public coverage for travel outside the aforementioned European countries (see Where does the public travel health insurance provide coverage?). If travelling outside these countries, you will only be covered if you are privately insured.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that you buy a private travel health insurance.

A private travel health insurance can, among other things, cover costs of home transportation, compensation in case of an interrupted vacation, costs incurred due to being recalled to Denmark in case of, for instance, acute illness of a family member, costs of search-and-rescue operations, and cost of evacuation in case of terrorist attacks.

Travelling abroad without adequate insurance can be financially ruinous, and furthermore, some countries will refuse to treat patients without pre-payment of costs. The conditions for advance approval of costs in case of chronic disease or ailment will in most cases also apply for any private travel health insurance.

Cancellation of trip

If you need medical treatment, or might reasonably be able to foresee a future need for treatment, it would be prudent not to book a trip. Once you have booked your trip, cancellation may come at a price.

A cancellation insurance will not always cover your costs. If you have a chronic disease or ailment, the cancellation insurance will only cover your costs if there is an unexpected deterioration in your ailment from the time you booked your trip and up until the time of departure. As a general rule, the deterioration must be of a nature that mandates hospitalization or treatment of a comparable nature.
