Refugees and Immigrants on the Danish Labour Market

Refugees and immigrants who have a Danish residence permit have the right to work on exactly the same terms and with the same rights as Danish citizens. This means that you can apply for any job on offer in Denmark. Read rest of article...

Asylum Seekers and the Labour Market

  • Asylum seekers are usually not allowed to work in Denmark outside the asylum centres because they do not have a residence- and work permit.

  • If an asylum seeker has qualifications of which there is a shortage, however, he or she can apply for a work permit. Meanwhile, this goes primarily for the asylum seekers that have taken Master's degrees in, for example, engineering or medicine

Refugees and immigrants are subject to the same rules as are Danish citizens as regards:

  • Wages

  • Dismissal

  • Re-employment

  • Unemployment

  • Health and safety at the workplace

Unemployment rates are higher for refugees and immigrants than for the total population. There are many reasons for this: Some refugees and immigrants lack the necessary training or language skills. Some positions are filled without ever being advertised - for example, because the employer or a colleague already know someone who can fill the vacancy. Finally, at some workplaces, they are reluctant to employ someone who looks different from themselves. A majority in the Folketing is working to help more refugees and immigrants into work. The reason for this is that the government sees work as the key to integration into the Danish society. Therefore, the government has launched a number of initiatives such as:

  • Better opportunities for traineeship

  • The possibility of learning Danish at a workplace

  • Targeted training and education of refugees and immigrants

  • Better and faster testing of qualifications

At the same time, the government has reduced the financial support for the newly arrived unemployed refuges and immigrants by introducing the so-called introductory unemployment benefit. The reason for this is that some people believe that this would motivate more refugees and immigrants for applying for work.
